Suburb's tally plan is smart

Dayton Business Journal

Bravo to the city of Oakwood.

This week, police and city officials from the suburb announced they will start tracking more closely the race of the motorists stopped for traffic violations.

Following quickly on the heels of allegations of racial profiling, this is a wise decision by the city. Officials are quoted as saying they don't believe their police are targeting minorities, but they understand there's a perception that they do. And they realize perception is more powerful than reality.

Let's hope they're as honest about and quick to release the results of their tracking.
